Devil and High Priest - Soul Brother

dA Link - [x]

It’s not too widely known that each zodiac sign is associated with a Tarot card, and in Homestuck some trolls suit their Tarot cards more than others. Some like Karkat and the Chariot are absolutely perfect. (victory in your youth, the triumph of love). Others, like Equius and Temperance, need some digging around to draw connections. (restraint for the sake of others, creation of hybrid forms) And there’s characters like Aradia and the Emperor, where the cards are weakly connected. (temporal rule…? …aggressiveness…)

Gamzee is one of the characters whose role resonates strongly with his Tarot Card, XV - The Devil. Basically it represents the path to Hell, seduction, the trickster mentor and bad habits that lead to stagnation and misery… alongside the ability to overcome your addictions, individuality, gaining practical, real life knowledge and power that comes from action. Just about anything he’s ever done draws a thematic connection to the Devil card, from his addiction to sopor to his mentorship of Caliborn to his blackrom relationship with Terezi.

On the other hand, Tavros’s connection to the V - Heirophant/Pope/High Priest is pretty tenuous; it being the card of the path to Heaven, society, institutions, the wise old mentor and knowledge, the greater good and power stemming from ideas and conventional social bonds with others. All I can think of concerning Tavros in connection to this card is that Tavros was on good terms with a majority of the Trolls, causing them to act according to what happened to him (think the FLARP revenge cycle), he used large groups of organized allies to complete tasks that were completely mundane but expected to be done in SGRUB, and that he dreamed of being a part of his society’s broken system one day, even though it would have chewed him up and spat him out.

But with a bit of research, I found The Devil and The High Priest are considered “echoes” of each other, cards that seem to be different from each other, but share a similar theme. Since Tavros and Gamzee are both friends that first appear to be really different at first but actually have a lot in common, I thought invoking the Tarot motif would be a good idea.

ON THE SUBJECT OF HORN-MAKING

oh wow I guess that didn’t need caps, anyways!!

I talked to a few people at the con about screw-on horns and I figured I’d pass on the information here

This is an insert nut. It’s awesome.

I much prefer using these as opposed to the plastic screw anchors, and they’re much better than just trying to screw straight into a horn, regardless of what material it’s made of.

What’s great about insert nuts is that they’re made for furniture when you want to insert threading somewhere, and that’s basically pretty much what you’re trying to do with a horn that screws on.

They’re easy to put in and STAY in (since they have threading on the inside and out, so you basically screw it into the horn), they’re made for repeated use (and made of metal), and you can use much-sturdier-and-less-dangerous bolts to attach the horns.

You can find these in any Home Depot, in the same isle as bolts, in the display where furniture attachments are (in the same place, there should be 1-1/12” bolts with flat heads. These work a lot better for headbands than the longer steel ones you find in construction.)

They usually come in 1/4th size, which is a thick enough bolt to hold on pretty much any horn, but small enough to not be heavy. All you do is drill a hole in the headband, and cut a fairly small hole in the horn to put the insert nut in, glue it if it feels loose, and you’re done!

(ps I’m sorry if this is rambly - I’m tired, and also got sad every time I heard about someone losing a horn, or stabbing themselves, because of having a bad attachment)

okay like here’s the whole thing with tavros

  • his whole story is literally him just him trying to use escapism to get away from the horrible shit that happens to him
  • (and usually failing)

like, there’s a lot you could argue back and forth for when it comes to FLARPing and what it means in troll culture and stuff, but there’s a few irrefutable facts about Tavros even at the youngest we see him

  1. he’s the second-lowest lowblood in his whole friend group (and is friends with Aradia, the lowest lowblood; I don’t think everyone knows Karkat’s blood color yet)
  2. he’s playing a (abet pretty dangerous) immersive game

now again, you could argue this forever, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that being a lowblood is pretty shitty and having a game that puts you on pretty even ground with other blood colors must be pretty awesome escapism

and he and aradia even mention how it’s better to play for fun??

and then his friend gets killed and he gets paralyzed??

which then made him the lowest living blood color in his friend group

and he was already playing at being pupa pan, and believes in fairies, and rufio, but even then he registers they are imaginary

so then skipping forwards to the game, tavros is back into escapism because, as we know, he’s off doing side quests while everyone is doing Real Game Things I guess (i’m pretty sure this happens but I might be misremembering)

anyways, fun game-playing is then interrupted by vriska and the whole tinkervriska thing, which tavros pretty obviously doesn’t want to deal with, since he goes to karkat, which he literally hasn’t talked to since he tried to ask for help after getting paralyzed

and the really crazy thing about this is he only really starts responding in a not “i don’t know what to do” way when vriska mentions treasure hunting and basically smooths everything over like it didn’t happen. so he goes back to game-escaping

and when shit gets real with aradiabot he just wants to fix vriska and make things Back To Normal (normal being treasure-hunting), but vriska makes that not-happen and tavros can’t go through with Actually Killing Someone

and then what does he do?

he spends the rest of sgrub asleep and dreaming

and I mean, this whole avoiding-things-that-are-bad pretty much keeps happening, whether it’s blocking dave or just plain stopping talking to gamzee (which is a whole ‘nuther ballgame considering he was best friends with another character using escapism/drugs to the x-treem)

the real kicker with this is when tavros finally decides to confront this, in the form of confronting vriska, he gets killed

and like, there’s plenty to argue back and forth about current-tavros and his relationship with vriska, but i’m pretty heavily of the opinion that it’s some kind of Stockholm’s syndrome, which makes a lot of sense considering his whole thing has been Pretending It’s Okay

‘coz Getting The Girl And Going On Adventures seems pretty ideal for a dude like that, even if vriska still seems pretty abusive to him and he has no idea if what they’re doing is good or bad and for all he knows it might destroy the universe

SORRY THIS IS FULL OF A LOT OF OPINIONS AND READING INTO THINGS BUT BASICALLY:

Tavros is always trying to Pretend Things Are Okay but things get worst anyways

he apologizes, avoids, and uses escapism to further this pretending

and then when he tries to take things on for real, he dies
